Brilliant Eladio Secades

This entry is also avaliable in: Spanish

IMAG0850 Havana. I do not I know any journalist more peculiar than Eladio Secades. This man that was born in the initial years of the Republic (1908) got involved to this profession from an early age. He collaborated in newspapers and magazines of the time like ”La Lucha”, “El Mundo”, “Alerta”, “Diario de la Marina” and “Bohemia” among other periodic publications.

His trajectory inside the press in Cuba is marked in two very different genres, the sport chronicle in which he didn’t have a marked relevance and his singular customs articles, where he stood out in such a way that today it is still an indispensable reference to get to know the society of that time.

The author’s style of writing has a very peculiar stamp. He divides each work in small chapters, inside the few sheets it embraces. He bastes a central topic with several secondary themes through sentences that are almost independent and uses in multiple opportunities the period instead of the corresponding comma, to give this way the emphasis proposed inside that content.

A good part of his works formed a section in the “Alert” newspaper and that later “Bohemia” continued in the noted magazine. They were published in a book format. Near a hundred of them integrated the three volumes that were compiled under the title of “Estampas” (1941), made by the Ministry of Education and Culture, “Estampas de la época” (1943) whose edition ran in charge of the Editorial Lex and the last “Estampas” (1958) that gather in their foreword the words of the outstanding director of the Marina’s Newspaper Pepín Rivero who won the prize Justo de Lara granted by “El Encanto” store , recently re-edited by UNEAC in a new volume.

The first of these texts bring an initial comment that self-defines these narrations when telling us that: “they are a lot of disordered Cuban observations and of Cuban ideas. For the favor they have found in the public, I am wanted to believe that I am a humorist. But I don’t believe it. I say with some clarity what happens in Cuba. And what happens in Cuba has a lot of grace”. This idea is a happy characterization of one of our national features.

The short story that opens up the work was denominated “El Medio Loco”, which contains the following fragment: “Our Politics has been prodigal in the production of the half-crazy ones, who is respected, because he is feared. Here we have suffered politicians who have suffered a stocking-madness appreciated both in the exaltation of patriotic feelings and, at the same time, and in the way the get rich quickly, thus behaving as purely insane people”. A comparison with current events is not a pure coincidence.

Some other matters appear like: “The new rich one “, “The handsome Creole”, “The spiritism”, “Bus drivers”, “The singer in fashion”, “Moving in”, ” Apartment Houses, “The Drunkards” and a series of topics with an astonishing description of present times. The second part adds five short stories and some outcries that take Ramón’s Gómez de la Serna influence. One of these says: There are two things that we can never know with accuracy: the age of the single ladies and the circulation of the newspapers.” The latter here constitutes a great truth.

An up-to-date interpretation of these ideas can be good to show our state and official press that there is also another type of independent journalism, the one which without academic titles, also in a democratic way, offers its points of view about our reality.

The closing of these ingenious glosses is denominated “The journalist.” Here our columnist exposes in a very interesting way his opinion on this type of professional and he points out: The journalist’s definition is one of those topics that distrust. Because there are not two equal journalists. Neither there are two same approaches on the journalist. Not even about journalism.”

To remember this outstanding figure of our press constitutes a fair recognition and a worthy homage. To have present these glories of our letters it is a duty to maintain alive our history.
