His death is a meaningful loss for Cuba’s independent press

Rogelio Fabio Hurtado, a Cuban writer, poet and journalist, author of the collection of poems Regresando al Templo, died in Havana on Wednesday. He was 70 years old.

Hurtado, who was hospitalized since April, died one day before his 71st birthday. The cause of death was a viral infection.

was awarded dos tigres (published in the US in 1996) and Hurra y otras elegías, which won the poetry prize awarded by Vitral magazine in 2002. His work on the legacy of San Juan de Dios order in Cuba, La Labor Hospitalaria de la orden de San Juan de Dios, 40 años en Cuba was published in 2003.

The Association of Free Press (APLP) awarded him the chronicle prize in Papel Periódico chronicle prize contest in 2015.

The APLP considers his death a sensible meaningful loss for Cuba’s free independent press.
